Walk Through Nature’s Tale: Lim and Kontija, Your Serene Escape!
Vrsar, Istria, Croatia
A walk along Lim Bay and through Kontija Forest offers an escape from urban bustle, a blend of protected nature, and an unforgettable experience of historical-natural symbiosis.
Walking along Lim Bay and through the Kontija Forest is the perfect retreat from bustling coastal towns. Lim Bay, often called the "Istrian fjord," stretches 11 km between Rovinj and Vrsar, while the Lim Cove extends to Pazin, forming a 35 km unique dry and submerged valley. Protected since 1964 as a geomorphological monument, this area is a natural gem. The Kontija Forest, a reserve since the Austro-Hungarian era, hosts Europe’s best-preserved Oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis) habitats.
During the walk, you’ll pass the Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael, built in the 11th century on an ancient Croatian cemetery. The abbey, once home to St. Romuald, symbolizes Christianity’s triumph over paganism. Experience pristine nature, ancient forests, and forgotten tales on paths once trodden by monks and traders. The scent of pine, rustling leaves, and views of crystal-clear waters make this walk unforgettable!
