Jama Baredine & Traktor Story – When nature awakens a story, and paths ignite a legend
Gedići, Istria, Croatia
Jama Baredine, a geomorphological monument in western Istria with a depth of 132 meters and underground lakes, not only impresses with its natural beauty but also tells stories through the "Traktor Story" exhibition featuring authentic vintage tractors. The Konobon Gallery preserves Mediterranean tradition through narratives about bread, olive oil, and wine.
Baredine Cave, officially declared a geomorphological natural monument back in 1986, opened its doors to visitors in 1995. Situated in the heart of western Istria, it is ideally located between Poreč (8 km), Višnjan (5 km), and Tara (5 km), and its total depth reaches 132 meters. Within its dark spaces, underground lakes sometimes reach an impressive depth of 30 meters.
In an area that has always been a crossroads of ancient paths and communications, a special exhibition dedicated to agriculture has been established alongside this natural attraction. Through carefully selected artifacts, original machines, as well as numerous photographs and documents, the exhibition revives the rich history of the region and its inhabitants through storytelling. Special emphasis is placed on the development of harvesting techniques – from early forms with threshing floors, through simpler and then more complex machines, all the way to modern combines and tractors, which have significantly facilitated work in the fields.
Among the most interesting parts of the exhibition is a collection of about fifty vintage tractors and machines, preserved in their original condition. Each of them, starting from the legendary Fordson from 1923, tells its unique story of the transformation of agricultural mechanization in this region – a collection that has been named Tractor Story.
An additional experience awaits visitors in the Konobon Gallery, located within white Istrian stone, where the Mediterranean trilogy – bread, olive oil, and wine – is presented in a special way. This story, which stretches from antiquity through the Middle Ages to the present day, invites discovery of the cultural and gastronomic heritage of this beautiful region through artistic and thematic exhibitions.
